There Is Gold In Them Thar Hills

Colossions 3:2 (NKJV) Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

A few years ago my husband and I attended a weeklong Elderhostel presentation on gold mining. We learned about Humbug creek, where in the early days of the gold rush the miners were just picking up nuggets out of the creek that were valued at the rate of six million dollars a day. Can you imagine the value of those nuggets in today’s inflated market?

A couple of years ago, a local news station covered a story where a contemporary miner brought in about thirty nuggets that were so big the assay office couldn’t weight them all at once. The scale simply couldn’t hold them. They were big beautiful gold nuggets. Yes, there is still “Gold in Them Thar Hills.” (western slang used by the gold miners).

I have a personal interest in gold. My father worked in the construction industry, building dams etc. One day my father showed me a piece of quartz that had a thin vein of gold imbedded in it. I was enchanted by it. I was about nine years old. Our family was poor, so from that day forward you could find me wading in the creeks of Oregon looking for gold. I was going to make us rich. Oh, the water in those streams was cold. I found a lot of pretty rocks but no gold. To this day if I am swimming in a river or creek I look down to see if there is a shiny nugget in the water.

At one time, an angel told me “the Earth and earthly beings are the treasure and the creation of the Christ” What if we reversed this statement and made Christ our treasure? Does the Bible have anything to say about this? The answer of course is yes. Most of us can quote the “love of money is the root of all evil” Aren’t all of us challenged by greed? Just like gold, money seems to have a fascination.

Let’s consider one of God’s conditional promises. The Holy Spirit sets forth a challenge to hunger for an eternal reward rather than a temporal one. Luke.6:24

This area of scripture in Job also contains a magnificent promise. Job 22:24-30 (Amplified) If you lay gold in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brook [considering them of little worth], 25 And make the Almighty your gold and [the Lord] your precious silver treasure, 26 Then you will have delight in the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God. 27 You will make your prayer to Him, and He will hear you, and you will pay your vows. 28 You shall also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light [of God’s favor] shall shine upon your ways. 29 When they make [you] low, you will say, [There is] a lifting up; and the humble person He lifts up and saves. 30 He will even deliver the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent; yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands. What a challenge to live by faith rather than our own efforts.

What amount of gold is equal to one of your loved one’s souls? Luke. 9:25 We know we can’t buy salvation, it is a free gift, this “gift of pardon” purchased on the cross by Jesus for us. Can you imagine leaving those nuggets in Humbug creek and making Christ your treasure? Ex. 20:3 (NKJV)“You shall have no other gods before Me.

What price would we pay to know that God hears us and grants us His favor? Oh! Can all of us really have clean hands before God? Under certain conditions, according to the scripture, your prayers will even save the one who is not innocent because of your intercession. What a magnificent promise. Imagine your whole family in heaven with you.

Where your treasure is there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:21 NKJV
